Day Two in Batipa

 May 20th

Today was pretty busy. We had to be up and at ‘em at 6am for a meeting, and after that we all sat down together to talk about a project we’d be working on. We’re meant to go spend a day in the comarca and give a presentation on water quality. We’re planning out  the presentation ourselves— which is exciting, albeit intimidating.

Afterwards we had lunch, and all of us piled into a few rented cars to go up to a hiking spot. We were taken to a wildlife corridor, which is one of the places we’ll be able to study with our mentors. It took about two hours to get up to the biodiversity hot spot and back, but we got to see a trio of baby alligators. That’s worth it, in my book.

It started raining hard in the middle of dinner. It was enough to get into the building we’re staying in and get some of our bunks wet. It kept going like that until around 8pm, when it died down a little bit.

Day Three in Batipa

May 21 Today we had cereal and fruit for breakfast. It was my first time trying papaya, and I actually really liked it- it's a really striking, reddish-orange color. I'm normally a pretty picky eater, but I've had a lot of fun trying foods that are new to me. We can't exactly walk to the grocery store or to a restaurant from out here, which means we pretty much just eat whatever our hosts make! I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunity to keep on enjoying new things.  Today was our first day doing work out in the field. My group is studying insect distribution in different parts of the preserve! We went up the same path that we took yesterday, though this time it almost felt harder. I think we were going at a bit of a faster pace, and we took less breaks. It meant that we got there quicker, but it also meant that I really  struggled to catch my breath. First Day in Batipa

May 19th, 2024 Today was our first day at Batipa field institute. It was incredibly hot, and I was almost immediately accosted by mosquitos-- but it was also very beautiful. We're right near the water, so you can look out from almost anywhere and get a glimpse of the ocean. Everything is green and alive. We've already seen quite a lot of animals; from a troop of monkeys in a mango tree, to a herd of goats kept off to the side of the main clearing. I was excited to hear that a lot of fossils can be found on the beach near Batipa. We were even shown some fossilized mangrove roots, which I thought were really interesting.

Batipa Day Nine

 May 27 Today wasn't very eventful. We mostly sat together in our groups to work on our presentations. We ended up getting ours done after about 8 or 9 hours (with breaks for lunch, etc.) Feels good to be finished with it, but it also feels a little strange; it means that tomorrow is our last day here at Batipa. I'm a little relieved to be heading home soon, but also a little sad. I think I’ll miss listening to howler monkeys before I fall asleep.
